Term 2 Week 6 | 22 May 2024
Principal - Ms Katrina Dunne
Welcome to the mid-way mark of Term 2. As we dive into another week of learning and growth, I want to take a moment to reflect on the fantastic local show that took place over the weekend. It was wonderful to see so many families come together and enjoy the festivities. I trust that everyone had a fantastic time, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and creating lasting memories.
One of the highlights of the show was undoubtedly the schoolwork section, showcasing the incredible talents and efforts of our students. It was heartening to witness entries from students across the entire show weekend, demonstrating their creativity, dedication, and enthusiasm. A big congratulations to all the participants for their hard work and commitment!
As we gear up for the formal reporting period ahead, I want to extend an invitation to all parents to actively engage with our school community. Your involvement is paramount in supporting your child's educational journey. I encourage you to take the time to communicate with your child's class teacher and engage in meaningful conversations about their learning experiences. Your interest and support play a pivotal role in shaping their academic success and overall wellbeing.
Whether it's discussing recent learning experiences, exploring areas of interest, or addressing any concerns, your participation fosters a strong partnership between home and school. Together, we can ensure that every child receives the support and encouragement they need to thrive academically and personally.
Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to your child's education. Let's continue to work together to nurture a vibrant and inclusive learning environment for all our students.
Have a wonderful fortnight.
Kind regards,
Katrina

Sacramental Program
Our candidates are preparing for Confirmation at Parish Mass on June 15, with Bishop Howell. We’d love to see you there to support them. Please pray for Clara Alexander, Hope Castles, Henry Lehmann, Dominic Chang, Samuel Jones, Arius Thompson, Sophie Williams and Grace Sullivan as they continue to prepare to be confirmed as full members of the Catholic Church.
Children’s Mass
Our children’s Parish Mass is fast approaching on June 1st. We’d love to see St Mary’s families there to support our parish and celebrate mass together. Please see flyer below.
Pentecost and The Most Holy Trinity
The liturgical season of Easter is drawing to a close as we celebrate Pentecost Sunday (May 19) and The Most Holy Trinity (May 26). Why are these celebrations in the church so special?
The Most Holy Trinity is celebrated the week after Pentecost. ‘The Blessed Trinity is the mystery of one God in three Divine Persons and it is the central mystery of our Christian faith and life. We call it a mystery because it cannot be understood by reason alone.’
Wishing you a peaceful fortnight,
Kirsty Lines

Escape into a Story is our term reading theme and during our library lesson we discussed this in relation to the book Where the Wild Things Are. I also shared with the upper students a book I had read over the holidays, The Wartime Book Club. Based on true events during World War 2, the novel delves into the pivotal role the library and books played in the survival of the occupants of the island of Jersey, during almost five years of Nazi occupation.
Last term, I included a section on the results of our 2024 student reading survey in the newsletter. One of the questions related to how we can improve the library and there was a large response, highlighting the wish for more graphic novels.
We are loving our new wall shelving to accommodate more titles.
Preps received the gold trophy and enjoyed free time in the library.
We have ten very busy students, who are reading and generating questions and answers to five book titles for the South West Reader’s Cup Competition in June. Once the students have finished their reading their get togethers will involve lots of discussions, and the chance to quiz each other in preparation for the event.
Last Wednesday all students participated in an online session with the children’s author and illustrator Renee Treml.

2024 is shaping up to be one arty year for St Mary’s. Hopefully you got to see the beautiful work the students created for the show. I am extremely proud of our students and loved seeing them show pride in their displayed art.
This term we also had a visit from Topology. Together with Years 3-6 they wrote and recorded songs, choreographed dances and composed rhythms on percussion to dance to. It was an amazing experience that we hope to share with you all later in the year.
Our biggest focus of the year is absolutely our school musical! Our students have nailed their auditions and rehearsals have started. Every Monday from 4:00pm to 5:00pm this term we have rehearsals for students from years 3 to 6. Younger students are welcome, but not required. See below for more information!
Term 2 Rehearsals [Week 6-10] | ||
Week 6 | First Rehearsal – Table Read | Students will read through the entire musical aloud, listening to the music as we go. This initial table read is the perfect way to introduce the show and get everyone excited! |
Week 7-8 | Music | The best way to begin rehearsing a musical is by teaching the music first. Students will learn the songs and how to interpret the score. |
Week 9 & 10 | Table Read | Once the music is well known students will sing along with accompaniment. This table read will give students a sense of the entire show and encourage ownership and team building early in the musical process. |

What’s happening this term in PE…
Basketball/T-Ball
For the first 5 weeks of this term the students have been fully engaged in basketball. The focus being ball control, passing, dribbling and shooting. I have noticed firsthand the improvement and rising ability levels of all the students as a result of having a go.
For the next 5 weeks the students will be learning new skills playing T-Ball. Also, this term I have been running a Soccer Clinic for all students on Monday/Tuesday from 8am and Cross-Country training on Wednesday/Thursday along with testing the students with a Beep Test. St Mary’s also held the District Soccer Trials.
By working together, we can keep fostering an atmosphere where each student feels appreciated, encouraged, and equipped to reach their greatest potential.
May peace be with you.
